Drone Safety Guide

Safe drone flying requires planning, knowledge of the rules and consideration for people, wildlife, property and other airspace users. The remote pilot is responsible for every flight.

Before you fly

  • Check that flying is permitted at the location using a CASA-verified drone safety app.
  • Check weather, wind, visibility and temperature.
  • Make sure the battery is sufficiently charged.
  • Inspect the propellers, motors, arms and other components.
  • Confirm that GPS, compass and Return-to-Home are working and set an appropriate return altitude.
  • Secure the memory card, camera and accessories.
  • If flying for business or as part of your job, confirm that any required registration and operator accreditation are current.

Do not fly a damaged drone or use a battery that is swollen, leaking or showing unusual warnings.

During the flight

  • Keep the drone within visual line of sight.
  • Stay at least 30 metres from other people and never fly over anyone.
  • Do not fly higher than 120 metres above ground level.
  • Fly only one drone at a time and only during daylight.
  • Do not fly over populous areas or near emergency operations.
  • Give way to all crewed aircraft and land immediately if one approaches.
  • End the flight if weather, signal strength or battery level becomes unsafe.

Weather and battery safety

Strong wind can reduce flight time, stability and range. Take extra care near buildings, cliffs, water and in gusty conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s operating limits.

Use only compatible batteries and chargers. Never use a battery that is swollen, punctured, deformed, excessively hot, water-damaged, leaking or has an unusual smell. Do not charge batteries unattended. Store them in a cool, dry place away from heat and flammable materials.

Emergencies

  1. Stay calm and try to regain control.
  2. Check whether Return-to-Home is correctly configured.
  3. Avoid people, roads and property.
  4. Land at the nearest safe location if returning to the take-off point is unsafe.
  5. Inspect the drone thoroughly before the next flight.

Rules can change. Check the current CASA drone rules before every flight.
